PHC 3320 Environmental Health Science

This course introduces students to environmental health science topics in the context of their impact on human and public health. Major environmental health problems including water quality, wastewater, trace elements in the environment, municipal and hazardous waste, food protection, vector control, air quality exposure to toxic chemicals, environmental justice, regulations, and safety in the work place are discussed.

HSC 3503 Principles of Toxicology

This is designed as a survey course to introduce students to basic principles of toxicology. We will cover the history and scope of the field; absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of toxicants; mechanisms of toxic action; carcinogenesis; applications of toxicology as well as human and ecological risk assessment.

HSC 4213 Environmental and Occupational Risk Analysis

This course provides an introductory level review of the major facets of risk analysis for environmental and occupational health. Students will gain knowledge of the various regulations and methods regarding the evaluation of health risk in environmental and occupational settings. The course will provide students with a background in the toxicological and epidemiological basis for understanding health risk and how these sciences are used to develop regulations that protect health in the environment and workplace. In this course, we will review common methods assessing risk, strategies for mitigating risk, and the limitations of risk assessment. Topics will include, but not be limited to, health risk from industrial pollution and health risk from workplace exposures. This course is designed to be a capstone experience for the Environmental Health Minor.

PHC 3302 Introduction to EOH

Introduces the principles of environmental health from a public health perspective. This course is designed for students with an interest in the environment, assessment of risk, human health issues, and control strategies to reduce health risks.
